The city of Bogota is coming alive for Christmas. There are Christmas trees and lights everywhere. We even came across a large polar bear in the park on Sunday! El Refugio was transformed for the holidays yesterday as well. Some of the older kids at the the residencia helped, shall we say, "deck the halls".
This weekend, we're exited to witness Colombia celebrate el Dia de las Velitas (The Day of the Candles). This falls on the eve of the Catholic holiday, the Immaculate Conception. All over Colombia, people light candles and lanterns in their windows to mark the start of the Christmas season. We've heard rumors of a chiva that leaves from Unicentro and travels through the city to see the lights. We hope to get on that bus!
The Christmas spirit here is creeping into us, even though deep in our hearts we're yearning for snow-covered Minnesota. While we're happy to be in Bogota and are still finding little activities to occupy our time (many of which include shopping), we can't wait to be back home to share a very white Christmas with Sophia and all our family.
