Coloma Coffee

Coffee Beans

My lifelong dream of running a coffee plantation came one step closer to fruition last week when the four families from El Refugio took a trip into the mountains to visit the Coloma Coffee plantation. Okay, my real lifelong dream is to meet Bob Saget in person, but this comes in a close second.

The drive through the mountains was gorgeous, and not nearly as frightening as driving through the mountains in Costa Rica. The weather here is so unique with the combination of the high altitude and being so close to the equator which is supposedly perfect for growing coffee.

The tour of the plantation was very educational and we learned all about the process for making coffee. We walked through the field of coffee plants, saw how they extract, dry and roast the beans. Unfortunately for us, the plant was not in operation so we couldn't see the complete process in action.

At the end of the tour, we were able to sample the end product, which prompted the Sonnek clan to buy out the entire coffee plantation of all of their goods. I'm not kidding. We cleaned them out.

It wasn't until after we made our insane purchase of coffee that we were informed that there was no more coffee available for the rest of the group. Julie and I felt a little embarrassed and decided to setup their own little coffee shop at El Refugio so the others could get some great Colombian coffee. The folks here don't seem to enjoy our marked up prices, but we'll be happy to cut people a deal if they watch Sophia for a while!

Julie and Ryan: Congrats on signing Sophia's sentencia...we are thrilled you will soon be bringing her home!!! Our Tuesday night is jam-packed however we are hoping that some contingency of our family can be there to welcome you home and see little Sophia for ourselves.

We loved the photos of the Corferias expo and all the others as well. Lots of happy memories for us of our own Christmas seasons in Bogota.

All the best to you as your wrap things up tomorrow and say your goodbyes (or rather, "hasta la proxima vez").

Believe it or not...the fun you've experienced in Bogota is just the beginning of the best part---being home for good with your new baby girl.
