Today Sophia Maria turned one, but she's been celebrating for weeks now! Her actual birthday has been a rather quiet day with just Mami, Papi, and Mocha. I'll start with today and then back up to recount all of our little girl's first fiestas in another entry soon to come.
August 30th, 2008
Mami and Papi greeted Sophia with happy birthday wishes and asked her how old she was today. She proudly held up her index finger to announce she's one. We then spent the morning relaxing at home (i.e.playing and napping). After lunch, we headed off for a wagon ride to the park. Sophia absolutely adores riding in her wagon that she received from Grandma and Grandpa Proehl as a birthday gift. We thought she loved stroller rides, but that was before we tried out the wagon. It's so much fun for Sophia to sit up and really see the world. She particularly likes keeping a close eye on Mocha. Plus, wagons are great for friends! Sophia has already willingly shared her wagon rides with her cousins Jordan and Jadyn, as well as with her friend, Andrew. Once at the park, Sophia was content to swing and swing!
After some hot fun in the sun, we jumped in the car to get a birthday treat at Cold Stone Creamery. On the way to the ice cream shop, Sophia enjoyed facing forward in her car seat. Being one is full of all kinds of new adventures! Sophia was delighted with her delicious ice cream treat. We figured that since she had already had two birthday cakes, we'd just stick to the best part today, ice cream.
Sophia looked pretty tuckered out after her cake batter ice cream with sprinkles on top; however, she was bound and determined to prove to us that because she was now one, she didn't need an afternoon nap. While her attempts were very valiant, she remained unconvincing and finally laid down for a late afternoon nap around 3. When she woke up at 5, she was once again a happy girl. We didn't really have any more excitement planned for the evening, but that didn't stop us from running into some.
We were playing in the backyard when I noticed a baby squirrel clinging to the side of our deck. Our squirrel crazy dog, Mocha, was ready for a chase, but the little guy seemed so frightened and unsure of what to do. We held Mocha off and tried coaxing the baby squirrel to make a run for it. When it looked like the little guy was finally taking our advice, he came running back to us. Sophia was chatting away to her new little friend, but I thought it best for them to keep their distance distance. We started toward the house, and the squirrel followed. We turned back toward the tree, and the squirrel followed. No matter where we went, the squirrel seemed determined to follow. We think perhaps he was looking for his mother, and we couldn't help but be reminded of one of our favorite children's books called, A Mother for Choco. Although our hearts ached for the little squirrel, we had to tell him that none of us were his mother and show him that it might be best to try climbing up the nearest tree to search. He finally agreed.
The birthday night ended with bath time, story time, and bed time. Sweet dreams, Preciosa. We love you soooo much and are overwhelmed with thankfulness that you made your way into the world on this very day, one year ago.

Querida Sophia,
We thought about you on your big day, sang a quick Feliz Cumpleanos before we ate our lunch, and promptly forgot to call you with our well wishes. From the sounds of it, you brought in your new year with a bang. The Ochocki boys are especially jealous about the ice cream trip!
It's amazing to us that you are already one year old. We remember seeing you placed in your mama and papi's loving arms, cabbing it home with you from FANA, and getting to know you better at El Refugio. We're so glad you are our friend and wish you the very best during your second year!
Besos y abrazos,
Dana, Chuck, Joaquin, and Tomas
